Commonly called the Madonna Lily this classic species lily produces elegant racemes of up to 20 intensely fragrant, pure white, trumpet-shaped flowers above glossy dark green foliage. One of the oldest lilies in cultivation, it makes a striking architectural feature in sunny summer borders and is particularly attractive in traditional and cottage-style planting.

Planting Instructions: Plant unusually shallowly. Unlike most lilies, L. candidum must be planted with the nose/point of the bulb close to the soil surface. Space bulbs approximately 20–25 cm apart. Plant in well-drained soil enriched with leaf mould or well-rotted organic matter.
Soil and Drainage Requirements: Chalk, Clay, Loam, Sandy soil; moist but well-drained; Acid to Neutral
Preferred Location: Full sun; East, South, West or North facing; Sheltered
Care: Once established, avoid unnecessary disturbance. No routine pruning is required; allow foliage to complete its natural cycle. Maintain good drainage and monitor for lily beetle, aphids, slugs and snails. L. candidum is particularly susceptible to lily disease, so affected material should be removed promptly.
