Native to the drier areas of central and western Asia and colloquially known as ‘Foxtail Lilies’ or ‘Desert Candles’ Eremurus can provide a spectacular display in a sunny border, sheltered from high winds. They require rich, well-drained soil conditions with adequate moisture whilst in growth and if the soil is somewhat heavy a liberal amount of coarse sand or grit should be mixed in to provide good drainage, particularly around and beneath the central crown which, once planted, should be only 4-6cm below the surface with its ‘legs’ spread out. Mulch with manure every autumn.
Flowering time: June-July.
Height: 150cm.
